In markets like the UAE, where identity and progress are equally valued, heritage architecture requires a design approach that is both respectful and forward-thinking.
At Casia Robinson, we offer a dedicated Heritage Architectural & Interior Design Service—focused on transforming protected structures into refined, functional spaces while preserving their original character.
The Hagg House project in the United Kingdom exemplifies this approach. Originally a Grade II listed stone folly known as the “Monk’s House,” it has been thoughtfully reimagined into a contemporary artist’s studio through a design process rooted in sensitivity, clarity, and precision.
A Design Approach Rooted in Respect
Heritage projects demand restraint. Rather than overpowering the existing structure, our approach focuses on working with what already exists.
At Hagg House, the original stone form remains the visual anchor. The new intervention is intentionally subtle—allowing the historic fabric to retain its presence while introducing a clean, contemporary layer that supports modern use.
This balance ensures the building evolves without losing its identity.
Material-Led Design Thinking
Material selection plays a critical role in bridging past and present.
For this project, we curated a palette that allows for both contrast and harmony:
- Natural stone preserved as the primary architectural feature
- Thermo-treated timber to introduce warmth and longevity
- Dark aluminium elements for refined detailing and definition
Each material was chosen not only for aesthetics, but for how it ages, interacts with light, and complements the original structure over time.
Visualization as a Design Tool
Our design service integrates high-fidelity visualization as a core process.
Through realistic rendering, we communicate:
- Spatial atmosphere and natural light behavior
- Material textures and tonal relationships
- The overall experience of the space before construction begins
This allows clients to clearly understand the design intent and ensures alignment from concept to execution.
Designing for Experience
Beyond aesthetics, our focus is on how spaces are used and felt.
At Hagg House, the transition from the enclosed stone structure to the open studio environment creates a deliberate shift—
from intimate and historic to light-filled and creative.
This spatial progression transforms the building into a space that is not only preserved, but meaningfully reactivated.
